State House and Senate convene in Columbia
By Thomas C. Hanson
COLUMBIA—The first regular session of the 117th South Carolina General Assembly convened Tuesday, Jan. 9, at noon in the State House. The session is scheduled to close June 7.
Speaker Bobby Harrell (R-District 114, Charleston and Dorchester counties) gaveled the House to order, swore in new members and assigned bills to various committees. Visiting the chamber was former Speaker David Wilkins (1994-2005), who now serves as U.S. ambassador to Canada.
Lieutenant Governor Andre Bauer presided over the Senate in his constitutional role as president of the senate.
The Republican House members met in caucus at 11 that morning in the Blatt Building on the State House grounds. Speaker Harrell told the representatives: “I am not a preacher. I am not a teacher. I’m just a born again Christian,” and then introduced chaplain Bob Leach Sr. of Greer (R-District 21 in Greenville County).
Leach quoted 1 Timothy 2:1-5: “I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;
For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.
For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;
Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.
For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.”
Leach then said: “Praise the Lord! It is not by works that we are going to get to heaven, but by grace, trusting Jesus Christ as Lord,” to which some responded, “Amen.” He then asked for prayer requests and led the representatives in prayer. He said his office door was open at all times for anyone wishing guidance in leading a Christian life.
