Brownback Pledges to Not Raise Taxes
Signs taxpayer protection pledge
ALEXANDRIA, Va. – U.S. Senator Sam Brownback today announced that he has pledged to not raise taxes and has signed the Taxpayer Protection Pledge from the Americans for Tax Reform.
“I want to say early and often that I do not and will not support tax increases,” said Brownback. “I support fundamental tax reform that is flatter and fairer instead of the burdensome tax code that we have today. While we debate tax reform, we should do everything we can to protect families and small businesses from tax increases.”
Americans for Tax Reform was founded by Grover Norquist during the Reagan Administration and focuses on reducing taxes and the number of times that income is taxed.
“Senator Brownback is a strong fiscal conservative who understands the need to overhaul the anti-prosperity behemoth that is today’s tax code,” said Kevin McLaughlin, a member of Brownback’s presidential exploratory committee. “Fiscal conservatives can count on Senator Brownback to fight back against the government’s insatiable desire to expand and to seek ever-higher taxes.”
Brownback continued, “Washington is built to spend every dollar on the table and then some, so I support doing everything we can to leave money in the pockets of those who earned it instead of with bureaucrats.”
Brownback signed the pledge at his home in Topeka, Kansas, with his son Andy acting as witness.
In 2003, Kevin McLaughlin co-founded Iowans for Discounted Taxes, which helped achieve income tax reform that will allow Iowa’s seniors to live income tax free in 2007. In 1996, he served as the Polk County Chair for Steve Forbes’ presidential bid, and in 2000 as the Iowa Vice Chair for Forbes.
