Sam Brownback, presidential hopeful, speaks in Greer

GREER—Sen. Sam Brownback (R-Kan.) spoke to a group of Republican leaders and members of the press at the Village at Pelham, Thursday, Dec. 21. He was introduced and hosted by Sen. Jim DeMint.
“I have a very direct, clear, simple, conservative message,” Brownback told the assembled group. “It has been a winning message since Ronald Reagan ran with it…. It is a message that will resonate across the country if we will deliver on it.”
Brownback noted that “South Carolina will in all probability determine the nominee for the Republican Party…. You’ve got to get into the race Iowa. You’ve got to stay in the race in New Hampshire. You’ve got to win it in South Carolina.”
The conservative Kansas senator said corruption charges hurt Republicans in the November elections because Republicans are values-based voters. “We said the right words, but we didn’t do the right things, and people don’t appreciate that. They want you to say what you mean, mean what you say, and do it.”
President George Bush “is a good man,” he said, “and I think George Bush is going to go down well in history.” Brownback said that in the current war, we are fighting radical Islamic fascists whose purpose is to drive us out of the region and establish an Islamic dictatorship.
Brownback wants to lower taxes and incorporate an alternative flat tax—18 percent, no deductions and no credits, or the taxpayer could chose to use the current system.
The Kansas senator stressed rebuilding the family, noting that 37 percent of children in America are born to single moms, and that for the first time in U.S. history more households are headed by nonmarried couples than married ones. The best place to raise children, he said, is in a family with a mom and dad. If you put a child in another setting, the likelihood of them getting a good education goes down substantially, the chances of them going to jail goes up substantially, the chances of them being in poverty goes up substantially. The best poverty reduction program we can have is to get married and get a job. Less than 7 percent of people in poverty are married and have a job.
In the welfare program we paid people not to get married. A poor single woman who gets married could lose up to 88 percent of her benefits. “We should be paying people to get married, not penalizing for getting married.”
Brownback said that life begins at conception, and we are now a pro-life nation with more than 50 percent of the population opposed to abortion other than cases of rape, incest and where the life of the mother is in danger. We need one more pro-life Supreme Court judge to overturn Roe v. Wade and send the issue back to the states, stressing that “the right to abortion is not in the Constitution.”
On runaway spending, the senator said the system, which he said is built to spend, needs to be changed. Representatives get accolades for spending, not for saving. He proposes to take the BRAC process used for military base closings to the rest of government. A commission would recommend which programs to fund. The president would approve or disapprove it, and then it would go back to Congress for one vote without amendments—either eliminate them all or keep them all.
Brownback, himself a cancer survivor, called for an elimination of cancer deaths in 10 years, “not that people still won’t get it because they will,” but he called for better detection and treatment.
Socialized medicine is not a panacea, he said. It allocates health care based on waiting, and people in this country do not want a rationing of health care. “We have to get a more effective model than we have now,” he said. “Right now we have a half government, half private sector model that is probably the worst of both.”
Brownback advocates health savings accounts, where the individual saves money and buys high deductible insurance, but that first $1,000 is his. He wants to make available more information on prices of health care procedures so people can shop around. He wants citizens to take their medical records with them on smart cards, not leaving them in the possession of doctors.
Brownback wants a 15-year goal to end our dependence on foreign oil in North America. He advocates drilling in ANWR, the Gulf Coast and the tar sands areas in northern Alberta, which may have more oil than Saudi Arabia, nuclear power, ethanol, bio diesel, and more electricity in our cars.
